Princes Highway Safety Improvements South Nowra to Jervis Bay Road

Safety improvements to provide 3.1km of 4 lane carriageway with median separation including the construction of a new 137m long bridge with a reinforced earth wall on an abutment approach. Works include approximately 38,000 cum of bulk earthworks and associated roadworks with stormwater drainage and water mains relocations. Additional works include pavement construction, guardrail and safety wire systems and linemarking

Challenges

Environmental challenges include the limited access for construction of the new bridge at Currambene Creek with potential flooding affects to works areas and the close proximity of the environmentally sensitive Jervis Bay Marine Park. Safety challenges include working in proximity to the large volumes and high speed environment of the existing traffic on the Princes Highway

Progress

Stages 1 and 2 were opened to four lanes of traffic on November 7, 2008. All pavement works, safety barriers, and pavement markings are complete. Only one major signage in Stage 2 remains to be installed. The project was completed two months ahead of schedule.
