New $15M refurb for Hornsby Hospital now open

The newest deliveries at Hornsby Hospital's obstetric unit are blissfully unaware of the meticulous planning and co-ordination that went into the redevelopment of the vibrant new medical facilities. It was the job of Reed Health to deliver the new $15million emergency department, obstetric and paediatric unit with minimal fuss, and no disruption to the operations of the busy hospital in Sydney's northern suburbs.

The 4,500 m2 facility on Palmerston Road, Hornsby is architecturally modern, but understated. Constructed from rendered brick and cladding, the building stands alone, but is linked to the main hospital by a full undercover walkway, and boasts two floors, housing the latest medical facilities and wireless technology.

To aid the transition to motherhood, the obstetric and antenatal unit takes up the entire first floor, existing quietly away the other busy hospital operations. It includes 12 single bedrooms all with ensuites, along with creche and isolation rooms for newborns. The emergency department, which also includes a new ambulance access, shares the ground floor with a new 12 bed paediatric ward and four bed PECC unit for high risk mental health patients. Whilst considerable time and effort went into the design and construction of the project, its smooth delivery was a reflection on the Reed team's management of the time critical stages

The lynch pin was the precision integration of old hospital systems with the new.Pleasingly for new mothers, children, and those needing emergency care, Reed's construction schedule co-ordinated the operational needs of the old wards, seamlessly bringing on line the new state-of-the-art facility in November 2006.
